Vancouver Film School-trained Lanteigne started in the nineties as a playwright produced in Vancouver, before making two skilled narratives of female coming out/of age, both showcasing her own effectively nuanced lead performances. Wilma’s Sacrifice (1998, 15) is a gothic rural period piece about the fanatical familial and religious repression of lesbo teen romance, caught redhanded in the barn, which fortunately leads to escape and a happy ending. Maids (2001, 17) is a hilarious comedy about compulsory hetero-socialization unfolding within a wedding from hell.
