Biography

Director. Reports from Cannes in May 1981, by both dailies and the gay press, were thunderstruck that Canada was represented at the world’s most prestigious film festival not only by Gilles Carles’s multi-million superproduction Les Plouffe, but also by a $500 twenty-minute Super 8 film by the unknown Trois-Rivières Cégep student Laberge. A coming out narrative of a young man, Tous les garçons showed, according to my report in Le Berdache (Oct. 1984, 34), its hero struggling with memories of earlier rejected overtures and experiments with drag, and finally his decision to be himself. A precocious blip in Canadian queer film history, Laberge seems to have disappeared from the radar screen thereafter, despite announced plans for a second feature.
